A few weeks ago, Klondike shocked the internet when it said the Choco Taco would be discontinued. This week, it reversed course, saying the much-loved ice cream treat might be back — eventually.

“We heard from our fans and we hope to bring this favorite treat back to ice cream trucks for years to come!” Klondike tweeted at a despondent fan on Wednesday.

After Klondike confirmed that Choco Taco was being chopped, people mourned the product online. Some threw away ideas to bring it back.

“I’d like to buy the rights to your Choco Taco and prevent it from melting away from the childhood of future generations,” Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted at Unilever (UL), the parent company of Klondike.

Senator Chris Murphy joked that he intended to “enact legislation to invoke the Defense Production Act to mandate the continued production of Choco Tacos.” That tweet got more than 10,000 likes.

The brand saw the outpouring of love for Choco Taco, it said, and decided to reconsider the move.

“The overwhelming support for Choco Taco has certainly made us rethink our long-term plans,” Klondike said in a statement sent to CNN Business Friday. “The team is working on a plan to bring it back, although it may take some time,” Klondike said.

But don’t get too excited.

“There are currently no clear timelines for bringing the Choco Taco back,” Klondike noted.

Klondike originally said it was shutting down Choco Taco due to “an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio.” Many companies have downsized their portfolios or menus during the pandemic to meet the demand for more popular items.

But some people did not believe in the explanation. They thought it was all a stunt, and that Klondike never intended to kill the Choco Taco – just creating enough buzz to ensure it was well received when it inevitably returned.

Klondike addressed the theory in a tweet from July, written from the perspective of, who else, Choco Taco. “I want to address the rumours: I’m really getting shut down, it’s not a PR stunt,” the ice cream taco said. “I knew you loved me, but not THAT much.”

The brand reiterated this in a statement to CNN Business Friday. “The shutdown was the result of complex production challenges and not a stunt,” Klondike said.
