The OnePlus 10T left a good first impression with us earlier this month, but it was a phone that was a questionable upgrade over the OnePlus 10 Pro. Now we’re learning that, like the OnePlus 10 Pro, the OnePlus 10T’s durability isn’t exactly at the top of its class.
JerryRigEverything today posted one of its classic durability tests in which smartphones are subjected to scratches, flames and most importantly a bend test. Most devices usually survive these tests without much trouble, but the OnePlus 10 Pro was a huge exception to that rule earlier this year.
When the 10 Pro was subjected to a bend test, the phone broke in half in just seconds due to what appeared to be a structural point of failure under the camera module. Although it is generally not encouraged to convert each phone under that kind of stress, it makes sense that a well-constructed smartphone shouldn’t be able to snap in half with just your bare hands.
Due to a durability test on the OnePlus 10T, the story is about the same.
The phone’s screen scratches as level 6 on Moh’s hardness scale, with deeper grooves at level 7, and the back panel acts like sandpaper on a razor blade due to its unique glass construction. The flame test leaves a permanent mark on the FHD OLED screen, but that’s not particularly uncommon. And the frame is definitely made of plastic, as this test shows, despite some confusion about whether or not it’s made of metal. The plastic frame helps with OnePlus’ specialized 360-degree cellular antennas.
But the real kicker here comes down to the bend test where the OnePlus 10T clicks again in the same way as the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Directly below the camera module, the frame cracks and the camera module shatters under relatively light pressure. If you bend it further past that point, the glass will break even more, and the damage will only get worse from there. In the video, Zach is able to literally take the phone apart with his bare hands, separate the screen from the chassis and even remove the cameras from the device.
Again, this kind of torture is not something that is a phone designed subjected, it is extremely rare that smartphones fail this test so spectacularly. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will not break if exposed to this. Neither does the Pixel 6 Pro. The Nothing Phone 1, which is cheaper than the OnePlus 10T, also passes easily. Even the foldable Galaxy Z Flip 3 fares much better – because it didn’t crumple like a dried leaf – in the same test.
